The summer program is for undergraduate engineers of all majors to take 2 classes in Alcoy, Spain. Students take 2 Notre Dame engineering classes, taught on the campus of the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Alcoy. Students live in dormitories and both classes are taught in English. Studying in Spain is a great experience because students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Spanish culture.

Overview

Alcoy Program 2014

The Summer Engineering Spain Program is a unique opportunity for all undergraduate engineers to explore Spain while taking 2 engineering classes for 6 weeks.  The program takes place in Alcoy, a small city in the state of Valencia near the southeast coast of Spain.  Students live in dormitories, and take 1 class taught by a Notre Dame professor and 1 class taught by a professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Alocy.  Both classes are taught in English.  The program also includes field trips to places of cultural, religious, and engineering significance.  In 2016, 34 students went on the program.  The Summer Engineering Program allows students to have a unique cultural experience by being immersed in the Spanish culture.

The program recognizes that because professional engineers practice in an international environment, they must be responsible to global technological progress as well as social concerns.  Students who participate in the international study programs are exposed to technological achievements in other countries and the everyday life in those countries.  Students become aware of the world, their voice in it, and their responsibilities to it.

About Alcoy

Students at vistaAlcoy is a small city of roughly 80,000 people in the Valencian state of Spain.  It is nicely situated in an inland valley roughly 20km from the Costa Blanca.  The city was established by James I of Aragon in 1256 during the Reconquista.  Alcoy is best known for the annual Festival of Moors and Christians, held in April, where Alcoy celebrates its founding.  Alcoy is known as the City of Bridges, because of the multiple bridges that span the local gorges.  The city is surrounded by national parks with excellent hiking opportunities.

The climate in Alcoy is typical of southern Spain: dry, sunny, and hot.  During the summer program, students should expect predominantly sunny weather with daily highs in the 80s, although it can be cooler or hotter on occasion.

The Valencian dialect of Spanish is spoken widely in Alcoy.  Street signs are in Valencian and traditional Spanish, locals speak both and will be happy to speak Spanish with you.
